![]() Allman Betts Band (from the album Bless Your Heart available on BMG) (by Bryant Liggett) The Allman Brothers Band sound, mission, and brand continues to be a family affair. That identifiable guitar tone moving amongst the Southern Rock and Boogie Blues rolls on via Devon Allman, Duane Betts, and Berry Duane Oakley, all second-generation sons of the original Allman Brothers Band, and the proper legacy to carry on that sound. Their sophomore effort in Bless Your Heart is that proper mix of jam and Southern Rock, as gritty ballads have a subtle psychedelic flair and every instrument is laid on thick. “Pale Horse Rider” opens Bless Your Heart, stretching out with slide guitar punches and an eventual meandering jam. The soulful “Carolina Song” then gives way to the horn driven, Garage Rock inspired “King Crawler” featuring Duane Betts on vocals. “Savannah’s Dream” is a 12-minute instrumental that begins with organ and a drum rhythm opening for a dual guitar melody, a safe space for exploration, heady solos, and an eventual big ending. “Rivers Run” is acoustic, stripped down and pleasant while “Should We Ever Part” is a big shot of Blues that kicks off with searing slide guitar amongst stuttered Prog Rock breaks. “Much Obliged” has that familiar slide that lives underneath a dark, Indie Rock vibe and an organ intro begins the split-this-town cut “Congratulations” that closes Bless Your Heart. Blood obviously makes The Allman Betts Band the perfect group to carry on this sound, and they do so with a nod to the past and a foot towards the future. All Southern Blues and all jam, generous rhythms carry floating and meaty guitar while the two-inch tape and ghosts of Muscle Shoals help with the vibe these dude’s dads set up decades back.
