![]() Teddy Thompson (from the album Heartbreaker Please available on Chalky Sounds) (by Bryant Liggett) Teddy Thompson keeps his latest release, Heartbreaker Please, an efficient outing. Ten tunes, each track hovering around the three-minute mark, save for an opus tracking clocking at a lengthy 5:17. Efficiency doesn’t only exist in song length, as this is a record of perfectly crafted Pop songs devoid of filler, song styles ranging from rock grooves with a kick to weepy ballads. Driven by horns, album opener “Why Wait” is upbeat and fun even when Teddy Thompson is singing about a lover that has ‘one foot out the door’. Why delay what you know, as he asks ‘if you don’t want me, let me go’. Cuts like “At A Light” and “Record Player”, completed with hand-claps keeping that upbeat and fun vibe rolling along with “Record Player” fulfilling that constant quest for songs to love lost in a sea of drivel. “Brand New” is a piano ballad that finds Teddy Thompson reveling in the new things that will wipe away past pain, the similar tempo of “Take Me Away” continuing on that idea of escape delivering relief while picking up the pace. “It’s Not Easy” is a Roots Rock swinger, the bounciest cut on Heartbreaker Please, Rhythm and Blues horns providing a solid chug under Teddy Thompson vocals. Succinct in his songwriting, presentation and delivery, Teddy Thompson has nailed a balance where he’ll lay you out flat with something somber only to have that acoustic Pop song perfectly in place to pick you back up.
