Sultans of String (from the album Refuge available on CEN)
Ambassadors to a land populated by hundreds of notes, rhythms, and sounds, Sultans of String offer Refuge to a worldwide displaced humanity with the stories on the album. A collaboration of over thirty musicians, Refuge becomes a voice for the voiceless, its melodies feeling both the real-life traumas and the hopes in “Imad’s Dream”, featuring Iraqi artist, Ahmed Moneka, and violinist Imad Al Taha as the frenetic swirl of sounds mirrors the hurried and desperate attempts to find freedom while Sultans of String soar and spin through the title track with Columbian harpist, Edmar Castaneda.
A celebration of a liberated spirit, “I’m Free” welcomes Waleed Abdulhamid into the Refuge musical family, Duke Redbird & Twin Flames speak the words of the people, opening the album with “The Power of the Land”, Gündem Yaylı Grubu weathers the percussive forces of “Hurricane”, and Somali refugee artist Ifrah Mansour becomes multitudes in “I am a Refugee”. Refuge does not dwell in the pain and suffering of men and women seeking better homes and life for families. Its music lives in the same dreams as those who traverse insurmountable odds and distances to live free. The music of “Ojhri Camp”, with Pakistani sitarist Anwar Khurshid and the tabla of Ravi Naimpally, pulses with human heartbeats and pumping blood while the delivery of Israeli singer Ysmin Levy translates the passions of moving people in “Asi Soy” as Refuge visits “The Grand Bazaar” along with Bela Fleck and Robi Botos. The international cast of Refuge contains new residents to North America, Sultans of String’s Chris McKhool feeling that ‘we’re collaborating with special guests on the album who are newcomers to this land (Canada), Indigenous artists, as well as global talents who have been ambassadors for peace. We wish to celebrate the successes of those who make the journey here and bring their extraordinary talents with them. We hope the conversations we can have as musicians will provide a model for peace that will inspire our politicians and citizen’. Speaking the international language of music, Sultans of String give a global shout out to Jazz fusion with “Weather Update”.
