Sophie & The Broken Things (from the album Delusions of Grandeur available on Petaluma Records ) (by Bryant Liggett)
Sophie Gault wastes no time getting right to your gut. Sophie & The Broken Things recent release, Delusions of Grandeur targets the ache, the opener in “Golden Rule” a slow ballad that hits on the working class, blue-collar Blues wanting to be anywhere other than where are standing crowd, wishing ‘this jar of change could take us away’. It’s a cut from a forever optimist hoping for a better life, looking to find anyone who, like her, hasn’t ‘lost her faith in rock and roll’. There are a few million-dollar phrases as one-liners. ‘Churches and bars are still under the stars’ from “Churches & Bars” or ‘I wish I had a dollar for every tear I cried’ from “Trouble” are those kinds of phrases you pull over to write down. The former comes in a bouncy Country groover, the latter with a slow psychedelic Blues vibe hidden within a Country male/female duet. The bulk of 21st century Country or Roots fans turned onto the genre via the last four Johnny Cash records were likely reared on harder music, and Sophie uses her own brand on a cut showing her metal loyalty in “Heavy Metal” and she hits a deep somber triple to close. “Long Walk Home”, “Far Away”, and “Parting Words” are all heavy ballads void of twang, slow dance numbers with pop-hit appeal. Delusions of Grandeur is a subtle Country vibe without being a Country record, leaning more toward the dark and electro-Folk scene.
