![]() Shawn James (from the album The Dark & The Light available on Parts + Labor Records) The voice of Shawn James rises up, his vocal flame flicker beckoning into The Dark & The Light, his latest release. The opening track sets the standard, taking sides like the album title when “Orpheus” swears salvation on a groove that snakes like the scent of sulfur. Shawn James is preacher with a purpose, condemning church policies of ignorance in “Burn the Witch”, warning of hidden deceit with “The Curse of the Fold”, and leaving clear instructions for his own exit with The Dark & The Light final cut, “When I’m Gone”. A South Side upbringing becomes a storyline for Shawn James as he pens a love letter to “Chicago” while a sad story marches on a funeral piano in “Love Will Find a Way I” as anguish walks with the words of “Love Will Find a Way II” until the pain finds refuge in the promises of the chorus. Album number four finds Shawn James hitting his stride, his voice booming over the stomp of “Haunted” and tender in the near-whispered wishes for better days in “The Weak End” as he uses personal experience to form a plan for the future with a motivational groove and soul-stirring horn blasts for “There It Is”. This music is healing. Burn the Witch a song about being misunderstood, the Love tracks were incredible, the social awareness all of it is beautiful and incredible. Shawn’s voice is the final magic of the music. It has the power to soothe the soul. Pretty sure I’m his #1 fan... lol I grew up around musicians and have graced the stage as a singer myself so I know the hard work and raw talent that comes from this man. He’s not just company lyrics sung by an edited voice in the studio. This is raw talent, a compassionate heart and poetic abilities.

It's difficult to articulate how the music makes me feel, but I think that's the point. I feel the music in my bones. Close my eyes and vibe. It's a rare treat to find that haunting sound that simultaneously touches the soul but also gets you on your feet. I love it.
