![]() Shakey Graves (from the E.P. Look Alive available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett) Known as roots dude, Shakey Graves (aka Alejandro Rose-Garcia) present a sound on his recent release, Look Alive, that takes a bit of a departure from the one-man act that defined the earlier part of his career. Shakey Graves holds claim to the DIY Roots term, and as an Americana artist, Look Alivewill serve broaden both the term and expectations of the style. Shakey Graves began pushing against the borders with Can’t Wake Up (2018) with Look Alive taking its place as a mini-sequel, where Graves explores Indie Rock with an Experimental ear. The E.P. kicks off with the Look Alive title track, a moody cut that could define our current quarantine life, where Shakey Graves sings ‘it takes a little while to get used to this rotation. Either way, I’ll make it through the day’. A slow, pulsing rhythm begins the soft, psychedelic cut “The Recipe” where Shakey sings in hushed, whispered tones ‘death to disco, fuck the hippies’ while quietly contemplating on the taste of RC Cola and Bud Light as someone ‘must’ve changed the recipe’. “Not Everything Grows” begins with a plucked, deep groove while the hushed vocals and dreamy textures continue to flow in a soft Folk tune while album closer, “Under The Hood”, is ambient and mysterious, a mantra where the question/statement ‘what do you got, under the hood, life is good for a beautiful stranger’ plays on repeat. Look Alive also serves as the soundtrack to Hello Gorgeous, the Shakey Graves web series that features random footage in and around his home, debuting songs that appear on Look Alive.
