![]() Penny & Sparrow (from the album Finch available on I Love You Records/Thirty Tigers) The latest release, Finch, from Penny & Sparrow represents a meeting in the middle. The cinematic texture of Finchis a fit for the force and feel of the Austin, Texas duo, the blend of Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke’s voices staging the tales with emotion, using a poetic tone and temperament as the colors for “Recuerda”, as gentle strums and the sway of strings fuel the space fantasies in “Bishop” and finger-snaps join handclaps for the street beat walk through “Stockholm”. For the band, the trajectory of career and lives spins more in line with a larger world for Finch, Penny & Sparrow feeling that ‘we were both brought up in the conservative South, where you’re instilled with the notion that the straight white Evangelical Christian male perspective is, if not the only, then the most correct view. We didn’t understand how wrong that was until we went out and experienced the world for ourselves. Almost everything changed for us in these last two years. It was a painful experience in a lot of ways, but it was also a joyful one’. The harmony of Penny & Sparrow has the unique ability to deliver two vocals as one instrument. Finch listens as combined voices float on a dream soundscape in “Cult Classically”, the words of “Don’t Wanna Be Without Ya” appearing as in/out breaths to match the hyperactive rhythms as it watches a summer night pass by alongside “Eloise” while Penny & Sparrow provide a DIY guide to sabotaging love in “Long Gone” and make a wish to the sonic cosmos of sounds freefalling through “It’s Hysterical”.
