![]() Paul Burch (from the album Light Sensitive available on Plowboy Records) (by Bryant Liggett) Paul Burch can spices up the well-used tag of ‘singer-songwriter’. The man nails Folk and easygoing Rock, and Paul Burch takes the liberty to give his songs a further twist with the addition of a subtle drop-in’s of Jazz or Blues. A closer listen reveals a lyrical history lesson, as his latest in Light Sensitive can have you muttering ‘who knew’ while grooving to a left-of-center musical vibe nestled within songs graced with a magician’s slyness. Paul Burch’s vocals are warm and laid back, each song carrying a sense of simplicity; weight from over-thought and complex production are left behind. Light Sensitive album opener “Love Came Back” is driven by a steady saxophone as Paul Burch sings ‘I got a one-two crush on you’ as aggressive surf guitars begin and end the tune while “Mardi Gras in Mobile” is a calypso-tinged cut that hammers home the fact that Mardi Gras in America originated in Alabama. “Fool About Me” is a boogie blues cut that features Luther Dickinson on guitar, “Glider” is a desert noir ambient interlude, and “Prince Ali’s Fortune Telling Book of Dreams” is playful and animated. The last two tracks close out Light Sensitive with a vintage vibe as “23 Artillery Punch” has Paul Burch scatting while “Boogie Back” sets the jukebox clock and calendar back to the R&B of the late 1950’s. Paul Burch welcomes other guests on Light Sensitive including Robyn Hitchcock, Amy Rigby and Aaron Lee Tasjan.
