Molly Tutlle and Golden Highway (from the album Crooked Tree on Nonesuch Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
A love of Bluegrass music sets the tone for Crooked Tree, the recent release from Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway. Co-produced by Jerry Douglas and Molly, the excitement of the genre infuses the album with a vibrant bounce and shuffle. For Molly Tuttle, the results fulfilled a wish list entry, and she recalled ‘I always knew I wanted to make a Bluegrass record someday. Once I started writing, everything flowed so easily: sometimes I’ve felt an internal pressure to come up with a sound no one’s heard before, but this time my intention was just to make an album that reflected the music that’s been passed down through generations in my family. I found a way to do that while writing songs that feel true to who I am, and it really helped me to grow as a songwriter’. The album opens when Crooked Tree introduces a free-thinking, independent woman in “She’ll Change” while Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway play tradition as they usher Bluegrass to a new level on tracks such as “Castilleja”. Welcoming friends and players on board for the recording, Crooked Tree features guests Margo Price (“Flatland Girl”), Old Crow Medicine Show (“Big Backyard”), Sierra Hull (“Over the Line”, and Gillian Welch (Side Saddle”). Six-string whisperer Billy Strings joins in for “Dooley’s Farm” while Molly’s yodel takes center stage for “Nashville Mess Around”. Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway pluck a sad song in harmony with Dan Tyminski with “San Francisco Blues” as Crooked Tree shuts its doors, exiting on an ethereal cruise through the campgrounds of California on “Grass Valley”.
