![]() Lucero (from the album Among the Ghosts available on Liberty & Lament Records) Lucero are a live band. The Memphis, Tennessee group has roamed the world for nearly two decades, longtime fans returning to each performance as a family gathering where Lucero transform first-timers into faithful. On album, Lucero has kept the gritty, rock and soul stage sound in their songs. Their recent release, Among the Ghosts, presents blue-collar characters walking through the stories from the pen of vocalist/songwriter Ben Nichols. The title track admitting ‘the first word she said to me was goodbye’ on a snaggly riff, the chorus exploding with a full-frontal shout as Lucero plow into the album. Among the Ghosts sets down a marching beat to meet the devil at a crossroads in “Everything Has Changed” as the album reads a soldier’s letter-back-home to Tennessee addressed “To My Dearest Wife” and dives into “Bottom of the Sea” on a potent push of rhythms as Lucero play a song “For the Lonely Ones”, holding out their collective hands asking for a dance. A darkness hangs over Among the Ghosts, Lucero using rock’n’roll chords to carve out tales of survival, the band storytellers chronicling hard-fought battles (“Cover Me”) and hard-shell hearts (“Loving”). Lucero strips Among the Ghosts down to barebones rock’n’soul as they offer open-hearted confessions (“Always Been You”) alongside dead-end decisions (“Long Way Back Home”), welcoming Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Fahrenheit 451) in as the disembodied voice acting as guide for “Back to the Night”.
