Los Straitjackets (from the album Complete Christmas Songbook available on Yep Roc Records)
Sticking with their branded musical territory of instrumentals, Los Straitjackets pass along seasonal joy with their recent release, Complete Christmas Songbook. Forming in Nashville, Tennessee 1988, Los Straitjackets have released thirteen studio albums, four collaboration albums, and five live albums. Surf music is a powerful force in the music of Los Straitjackets, the purity of the form comfortable enough with its place in the melody to allow touches of Latin vibes (“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”), rock’n’roll jangle (“Jingle Bells”), and late-night noir (“Silver Bells”). Complete Christmas Songbook mixes Mexican rhythms with surf guitar licks as Los Straitjackets translate “Feliz Navidad” with accents of ‘La Bamba’.

Rock’n’Roll riffs and handclaps are bright trimming for “Deck the Halls” while country and western rhythms corral thick guitar leads for “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and six-strings ring like bells in “Close to Christmas (The First Noel)”. The drums lead a charge into “Jingle Bell Rock” and keep the hammer hits pounding to clear a path through “A Marshmallow World”. A street rumble is the playing field for “The Little Drummer Boy” as Complete Christmas Songbook fills in its catalog with traditional (“Oh Come All Ye Faithful”) to modern (“Frosty the Snowman”) holiday treats while Los Straitjackets march out dual guitar leads for “Groovy Old Saint Nick” and stir R&B into the seasonal brew for “Soul’d Lang Syne”.
