![]() Los Straitjackets from the album Channel Surfing available on Yep Roc Records (by Bryant Liggett) Wrestling masked surf-rock band Los Straitjackets have a knack for branding the songs they cover as eternally part of their own catalog. It doesn’t matter who wrote it the song nor the genre or what song is about, once Los Straitjackets surf-rock up a tune it is how it was always meant to sound. On Channel Surfing, their recent release, Los Straitjackets have plucked five television themes, combined two tunes into one medley, and giving the tracks the classic Los Straitjackets treatment. If you have zero knowledge of the TV shows and their themes, you would think this is just another kick-ass Los Straitjackets record, which Channel Surfing is. Los Straitjackets doesn’t take many liberties with their version of the intro theme from “Game of Thrones” as they toss around splashy guitar and turn the medieval show into a spaghetti western. The original themes from “Dancing with the Stars” and “Sex in the City” both have bossa-nova leanings; Los Straitjackets mashing both tunes together as “Medley: Dancing with the Stars/Sex in the City”, leaving room for plenty of surf cha-cha while “The Fishing Hole” from The Andy Griffith Show is turned into a dance number that swings and grooves. “Ashokan Farewell” from Ken Burns “The Civil War” is a somber soundtrack of tragedy, turned into a driving number where that once sad melody swings via a reverb drenched guitar.
