Leftover Salmon (from the album Brand New Good Old Days available on Compass Records)
Optimism strikes a chord in the title track for the recent release from Leftover Salmon, Brand New Good Old Days. The architects of jamgrass are known for musical fluidity however one thing cannot be denied, Leftover Salmon are an American band. They take their place alongside groups (Grateful Dead, Little Feat, Los Lobos) that pride themselves in not being branded yet integrating American Roots with a musical mix melting pot of Rock’n’Roll, Bluegrass, Soul, Country, Americana, Zydeco and other homegrown flavors. Memories are shuffled along with the rhythms in “Left Unsung” as Leftover Salmon offer an electrified string band version of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” while they spit out a list of steps to take and flags to wave in “Category Stomp”. An ever-changing lineup for Leftover Salmon continues to expand the range of the band. For Brand New Good Old Days, the members of Leftover Salmon include co-founders Vince Herman (vocals, guitar, washboard) and Drew Emmitt (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, electric guitar) as well as Greg Garrison (bass, vocals), who also produced the new album, Andy Thorn (banjo electric banjo, vocals) and Alwyn Robinson (drums, vocals). A late-night open road song sets the groove for “Flyin’ at Night” while Leftover Salmon serve a resume on the rhythm of “Boogie Grass Band” as a slowly revolving Blues tints the band’s Bluegrass on “Waterfront” while the genre’s tradition sets the terms in “Red Fox Run”. Leftover Salmon exit on a fast track beat, immersing “We’ll Get By” in the optimism of the album title, Brand New Good Old Days.
