LadyCouch (from the album The Future Looks Fine on Blackbird Record Label) (by Lee Zimmerman)
LadyCouch are given to music of a decidedly vintage variety, and while their seemingly inexplicable handle doesn’t hint at any real referencing whatsoever, their sound says it all. With an exuberant approach that brings to mind such classic combos as Delaney and Bonnie, Ike and Tina, and Janis Joplin era Big Brother and the Holding Company, they demonstrate a grit and groove firmly entrenched in Rock, Blues, Soul, and classic R&B. Indeed, being an eleven-person outfit, complete with a three-piece horn section in tow, LadyCouch has all the essentials necessary to pack a powerful punch straight from the get-go. Credit is especially due the band’s two lead singers, Keisha Bailey and Allen Thompson, both of whom share a formidable presence at the fore. There’s no shortage of rousing numbers on The Future Looks Fine, their debut outing, given a style that ranges from the Bluesy bluster of “Do What You Gotta Do”, “Foolish and Blue”, and “Delightfully Devilish” to the soulful strut of “As Long as I’ve Got You”, “Heartache”, and “Free to Breathe” and straight through to the rocking revelry of “Purple Rose and the Black Balloon” and “Learn to Lose”. With few exceptions, the energy manages to remain intact, their irrepressible enthusiasm gravitating towards a groove that’s consistently compelling. That sprawling style aside, there’s nothing unwieldy or cumbersome within their full-throttle delivery, thanks to a polished presence that either swings or saunters at every turn. Clearly then, LadyCouch possesses the credence needed to gain favor with those that relish a jam band discipline or anyone with a fondness for some southern rock revelry. The Future Looks Fine appears to be an apt prophecy as far as what lies in store, proof positive that — pardon the pun — LadyCouch can rest on their laurels, at least for the time being.
