Katie Henry (from the album On My Way available on Ruf Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
File Katie Henry under Blues, that genre claim serving as more of a catch-all for her most recent sounds. Her latest, On My Way, is far from traditional Blues; sure, you can hear the Blues but there’s also Roots Rock, cuts with bouts of subtle groove, and even a song you could toss around into a laid-back lounge set. Katie Henry explores straight-up Blues Rock on cuts like “Bury You” and the title track, both tunes tipping towards guitar heavy. “Empty Cup” is ripe for a dark and smokey bar, the tale led by Katie Henry’s sultry croon, and “Without A Fight” is a Hammond organ heavy groover. She’s also not afraid to drop a Folk number into On My Way when “Setting Sun” presents a tender, acoustic guitar led ballad yet she soars with Rock, as she does on “Got Me Good”. “Too Long” is straight ahead, lowdown, and dirty Blues, a slow burner with sweet guitar and harmonica fills. The album closer in “Catch Me If You Can” has wonderful slide guitar and a click-clack Country shuffle rhythm, a road-song and get out of town cut. Katie’s cool with great vocal presence. There’s enough straight-ahead Rock that hints at Blues along with bouts of Americana that give the record some broad appeal. Call Katie Henry ‘New American Blues’… that covers the ground she walks.
