![]() Jesse Dayton (from the album Gulf Coast Sessions available on Blue Elan Records) (by Bryant Liggett) Jesse Dayton has always been a smart musician, with as many intelligent things to say about current affairs as he has slick guitar riffs. He is a vital part as a necessary voice and also a musician who also knows how to score a soundtrack to a house-party. His latest Gulf Coast Sessions is a nod to the music of his upbringing, Cajun and zydeco, R&B and country, presented punked-up and rowdy, charging and grooving, with Jesse Dayton at the helm of the bulk of the instruments. Jesse Dayton goes from zero to 60 out of the gate, fifteen seconds of ambient party noise is abruptly cut off by a drum intro, three chants of “hey!” and “Lo-Fi Lover” has Dayton exclaiming ‘I’m a firecracker baby, about to blow your mind. I’m a walking talking robot, programmed to make you feel fine’. The Beaumont, Texas native throws some props to his hometown and its blue-collar cats doing the “Beaumonster Boogie” while “Carenco Girl” is a swinging tale with potential to be a murder ballad about zipping off with another dudes girlfriend. “Mardi Gras Shake” is an accordion driven cut that nods to the Cajun music that drives parties everywhere inside, and beyond the borders, of New Orleans as “House Party 2340 Dauphine” wraps the record with drumming into leading into a rowdy blues number as Jesse Dayton narrates what must be a ripping party, complete with ‘nekkid people getting’ obscene’. Jesse Dayton knows his music history and can properly explore all the avenues of the Americana Roots super-highway. Gulf Coast Sessions has him doing so with a gritty Rock attitude and a load of guitar chops; the dude is a cool treasure and his latest is a welcome respite from the ugly reality of 2020.
