![]() Jason Lee McKinney Band (from the album Pieces available on Pinecastle Records) (by Bryant Liggett) The Jason Lee McKinney Band set up a tent on hallowed ground to record their latest effort, Pieces. The band trucked to The Zebra Ranch, home to the Dickinson Family and the studio of the late Jim Dickinson, father to Luther and Cody and their musical project, The North Mississippi All-Stars, Jim a member of the Dixie Flyers and producer for a variety of recordings from Indie Rock (The Replacements) and Alt Country (Mojo Nixon) to the Rock’n’Soul of neighboring Memphis, Tennessee (Screamin’ Jay Hawkins). Jim Dickinson’s ghost and talent still kick around the studio, echoing on Pieces and the Jason McKinney Band’s traditional Blues slow-dances, their arm-swinging Funk, and grooving Soul. A ripping guitar lead introduces Pieces with album opener “Blues in Bahrain”, setting a tone that, at its core, makes a guitar driven recording that dances to the beat of a lot more from the band. “Good Old Soul” is just what the title impliues, a testament to Soul music being ‘nothing else I need’ while the title track and “New Strings on An Old Guitar” are radio-born ballads. A funky hook strolls into the party already going on “Groove Is Getting Old”, a cut where the laid-back keyboard solo, readying for take-off, pulls back and lets go with an aggressive guitar riff. “Thicc” opens with a dirty guitar riff, quickly turning into a pseudo-disco dance cut where a Funky rhythm, driven by guitar and keys, lives under the rap-influenced vocals and handclaps. “Normal Is Just an Exit” is the ripping album closer for Pieces, the Jason Lee McKinney Band chugging on the hard-Blues Rocker where an Allman Brothers-shaped dual guitar solos stop-on a-dime.
