Jamestown Revival (from the album Young Man on Jamestown Revival Recordings/Thirty Tigers) (by Lee Zimmerman)
Coming on the heels of last year’s cowboy themed EP, Fireside with Louis Lamour, Young Man finds Jamestown Revival still committed to a western noir, courtesy of a mellow meandering sound that offers glimpses of open spaces and room to roam. The songs evoke subtle soundscapes, evocative aural encounters that encourage the listener to romanticize and fantasize all at the same time. In that regard, there’s little change in tone, or for that matter, any discernible uptick in energy whatsoever. Each of these offering maintain a calm and caress, all bound up in a decidedly seductive sway. Songs such as “Coyote,” “Northbound”, “These Days”, “Way It Was”, and “Old Man Looking Back” coast along with a gentle drift and a sense of solitude and serendipity. The easy lope of the aptly titled “Slow It Down” and the folksy appeal of the title track provide some subtle variation, but in general, there’s little deviation from the supple sound that permeates the proceedings overall. Consistency is key, and to the band’s credit, they maintain that alluring aura from beginning to end without any dramatic digression to speak of. As a result, Young Man follows a familiar formula, one that was carefully crafted through the band’s earlier efforts. Chief revivalists Zach Chance and Jonathan Clay imbue their songs with finely focused harmonies and the essential inspiration they glean from western wilderness environs. And while their contemplative approach may sometimes lean toward lethargy, the beauty of their ballads more than makes up for any absence of energy. Ultimately, Young Man is an admirable effort, further evidence of Jamestown Revival’s ability to combine imagery and allure. It offers everything needed to provide a soothing sojourn.
