![]() Hudspeth and Taylor (from the album Folie a deux available as a self-release) Roughly translated as ‘shared madness’, Folie a deux, the recent release from Hudspeth and Taylor, also bears the description ‘madness for two’. Hudspeth and Taylor may share a few mad moments though the pair are far from teetering over the edge. The playing on Folie a deux is loosely tight, the guitar lines of Brandon Hudspeth a Bluesy tease on the title track, his playing sliding across (over, under, and around) the tune as the riffs flicker on “I’ll Be Right Back”. Jaisson Taylor provides vocals as he makes use of a variety of percussion instruments to weave around the centerpoint of the beat, the cajon, in the songs of Hudspeth and Taylor. A Blues breeze blows into Folie a deux as the riffs of “Big Fat Hairy Lie” lather the album with a sweet, sticky non-stop boogie beat. The Blues is heavy to match the funereal footfalls trudging through “I Know It’s Gonna Rain Again” as a rushed rhythm catches up with the hurried exit of “Low Down Dealer Man” and a boogie percolates on the simmering strut of “Future”. Hudspeth and Taylor met on the Kansas City music scene, the pair carefully curating Blues traditions with offer “Candyman”. Folie a deux points a finger on an accusatory Blues groove for “Sometimes You Act Crazy”, cutting a path on the persistent rhythms of “Roll with Me Baby” and adopting a ballsy rock’n’roll strut for “Walking with My Baby”.
