Hanna PK (from the album Blues All Over My Shoes available on Vizztone Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The latest from Hanna PK is a little ballad, a load of boogie, and a lot of bounce. The South Korean-born, Rochester, New York-residing pianist gets after it on her latest All Over My Shoes, eleven cuts of boogie woogie piano ripe for a Honky Tonk bar, Blues festival, and even a slow dance across the porch. Hanna PK packs a punch, a powerhouse player who when she isn’t banging out a Rocker can lay out a soulful croon. First, the Rock: “Bad Woman” is classic piano Blues, a big cut, sung from the perspective of a badass lady and “It’s Alright Baby” is a fun mover with classic barroom bounce. “Bad Habit” is a playful strike at the tobacco industry, “Two and Four” a ripper where her piano pounds. Hanna PK slows it down on the gritty “Insomnia Blues” while “No One Will Ever Know” is a heavy hitting weeper with a Gospel feel. It’s really all about her playing. This woman lays it down, as ‘tickling’ the ivories seems non-existent, more like hammering. Which she does, but it is all clear and consistent with a lot of feel and even more soul, as Hanna PK seems to lay out a textbook example on aggressive piano. She’s not hiding behind flash-fire riff playing as Hanna PK honors keeping the structures of her songs.
