Good Morning Bedlam (from the album Lulu available on Bedlam Records) (by Bryant Liggett
Saying the phrase ‘Good Morning Bedlam’ is like greeting turmoil with warm, welcome arms. You want it, you know that uproar could be a little chaotic but that is okay. As a band name, and in particular the band Good Morning Bedlam you get that same furor, and its coming to you with a pleasant hello. Good Morning Bedlam are a glowing quartet, inviting and friendly but also capable of doling out a blast or two among beats and ballads, their latest Lulu delivering some punky Celtic (that’s the uproar), among warm, indie folk. Good Morning Bedlam deliver a punch of power Folk right out of the gate, “I Am Sad” opening with a charge of hard strumming before turning into a part Celtic, part New Grass burner with vocals trading places with a fiddle. The track is an emotional opener. They are also playful. “Hold Me” has an vintage parlor Jazz bounce and swing, “Haint Blue” is a gothic-gypsy cut, and “The Haunting” is a soft duet with intricate instrumentation flowing under and above scatted vocals. “Enough” has a punchy, New Grass intro before the vocals kick in; blasts of instrumentation and repeated lyrics make the song mischievous, and that punky, Gypsy vibe returns for the swift, moving and swinging “You Are Gonna Miss Me”. While the slower parts are delightful and delicate, the Good Morning Bedlam delivery comes with the upbeat tunes; they remain the stars of the show.
