![]() Genya Ravan (from the album Live at CBGB’s available on AHA Music) Genya Raven was ground zero for the lifechanging moments that Rock’n’Roll experienced in the early days of CBGB’s in NYC. She documented the sound as a producer of The Dead Boys on their Sire Records debut, releasing her own albums And I Mean It and Urban Desire. The majority of the cuts on Live at CBGB’s come from her solo albums from the period. Rock’n’Roll swagger is the calling card for “Pedal to the Metal” and the punk rock strut of “I Won’t Sleep on the Wet Spot” from And I Mean It, adding the rock’n’roll resume of “Jerry’s Pigeons”, “Shadowboxing”, “Knights in the Rain”, and “Aye Colorado” (featuring Lou Reed) from Urban Desire. Vocally Genya Ravan is a powerhouse on steroids. Live at CBGB’s begins by kicking the doors open on the album with a version of The Supremes’ “Back in My Arms Again”, closing out the album with the smoldering Blues of B.B.King’s “Don’t Answer the Door” and including a take on The Faces’ “I’m Flying”. Prior to her term at CBGB’s, Genya Ravan was the lead singer for Ten Wheel Drive, the jazz fusion style of the band captured in the Live at CBGB’s version of their track “Eye of a Needle”. Her biggest solo success came from inclusion in a film, Genya Ravan including “Love is a Fire” from The Warrior soundtrack on Live at CBGB’s.
