![]() Elva (from the album Winter Sun available on Tapete Records) The opposites sides of nature make the soundtrack for Winter Sun, the recent release from Elva. Their band name a Norwegian word for river, Elva used the elements of the natural world surrounding their home of Moss, Norway, Winter Sundrawing its strengths from the beauty of a Scandinavian summer as well as the harshness of its darker months. Standing on the cusp of spring, Elva dab Country onto the wandering guitar riffs of “Don’t Be Afraid” as they shuffle on heavy footsteps through “Dreaming with Our Feet”, find “Harbour in the Storm” amid gentle acoustics, and admit “I Need Love” on tightly wound melody. Comprised of ‘Allo Darlin’ vocalist, Elizabeth Morris and Ola Innest of Swedish bands Making Marks and Sunturn, Elva tap bandmates from ‘Allo Darlin’ mirroring the sound of the band’s past recordings with lush string arrangements from the group’s Dan Mayfield on violin and cellist Ofelia Østrem Ossum as well as drummer Michael Collins coming in as producer for Winter Sun. Indie Folk sparkles in the notes and sonic stretches of “Everything is Strange” while Indie Rock guides the hurried rhythms of “Ghost Writer”. Winter Sunputs a strong current under the groove of “Tailwind” as it greets a Country-tinged dawn in the title track while Elva open the album with a travelogue tale told from a bed of Folk Rock with “Athens”.
