![]() Dustbowl Revival from the album Is It You, Is It Me available from Medium Expectations Records (by Bryant Liggett) Dustbowl Revival have been genre-defying since day one, an Americana oddity that fits in multiple formats. The Los Angeles based Roots outfit play around with Gypsy Jazz, Old Time Music, and other string-driven styles, staying comfortable within a world of Pop music. Dustbowl Revival are still the band impossible to put in a box though Is It You, Is It Me, their latest release, comes across as an avant Folk Rock swing with no discernible influences, cohesive yet obscure. ‘What if you got everything you wanted, and you thought how did I get here?’ is a question that kicks off the playful and horn-driven “Dreaming” while “I Wake Up” is a look to the past standing firmly planted in the present, the tune sounding like a cover of a Doo Wop group circa 1959, the cut rolling into the Belle and Sebastian inspired “Penelope”. “Mirror” with its plucked strings is a slow and dreamy recollection and an apology, followed by “Ghost” which hits on rock-steady and R&B. “Just One Song” is simple and playful, its lyrical ideas a bottomless well, just like your stoned friend that always talks in a stream of consciousness manner touching on getting stuck in the snow to Springsteen’s Thunder Road, making mental tangents in between. Is It You, Is It Me needs a round of applause for its harmonies as Z Lupetin maintains the dominant voice, Liz Beebe’s contribution a close runner-up though both are equal parts in creating a great collection of Indie Pop for Dustbowl Revival.
