David Bromberg (from the album Big Road available on Red House Records)
There is an intimacy in the playing on Big Road, felt when David Bromberg re-introduces “Diamond Lil”, an old friend from his 1972 Demon in Disguise release. Tender fingerpicking sparkles around “Mary Jane” while warm harmonies turn the wheels on the Country sway of “Roll on John”. Big Road is the recent release from musical journeyman David Bromberg. The playing is stellar, David Bromberg backed by his touring band, Mark Cosgrove (guitar, mandolin, vocals), Nate Grower (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Josh Kanusky (drums, vocals) and Suavek Zaniesienko (bass, vocals). The playing of the band members is intuitive, backing David seamlessly as they glide between the musical moments of “Medley Maiden’s Prayer/Blackberry Blossom/Katy Hill”, provide a solid backbeat as crisp horn lines drift over the Country Blues of “Who Will the Next Fool Be”, and join in on the harmonies for a shanty song on “The Hills of Isle au Haut”.

As with any David Bromberg album, the ingredient added that can never be duplicated or copied is the man with his name on the album cover. Over the course of nearly fifty years of playing, David Bromberg has contributed to the music of Richie Havens, Bob Dylan, Tom Rush, Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, Ringo Starr, Rory Block, Doug Sahm, and many others. Credentials aside, beyond his talent, it is the deep understanding of both the history and the styles of Blues, Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz, Rock’n’Roll, Country & Western that separates David Bromberg from other musicians. Each track on Big Road is made with care, The mountain music created with acoustics and delivered with electricity on “Take This Hammer” while the honky tonk romp in “Lovin’ of the Game” is bright as neon. David Bromberg leads the chorus with lead vocals and handclaps as Big Road marches over “Standing in the Need of Prayer” as Country saddles up for the tale of “George, Merle, or Conway”.
