Danny George Wilson (from the album Another Place on Loose Music) (by Lee Zimmerman)

With a prolific career that spans his bands Grand Drive and Danny and the Champions of the World, Danny George Wilson clearly owns a fabled career that he can certainly rest his reputation on. Nevertheless, with his new LP Another Place, he opts for a purer Pop approach, one that eschews the Americana influences of his earlier efforts. It’s a change that’s evident in both melody and messaging, an effusive offering that makes the music feel consistently contagious.

While its title might be indicative of that change in both tone and temperament, it’s also clear that Wilson is ready to share his enthusiasm with anyone willing to listen. ‘I’m sincerely hoping, when you put it on, all your pain is gone’ he sings on “Sincerely Hoping”, and indeed, the majority of these songs echo that upbeat sentiment. And while he draws occasional help from marquee names — Jeff Tweedy, Gerard Love, and Emma Swift — it’s all but incidental. Credit the exacting arrangements for retaining the luster that makes practically every offering shimmer and shine.

In fact, there are any number of examples. “Lost Future”, “Heaven for Hiding”, boast an effusive delivery that makes no attempt to disguise the giddy sentiment. “Giving Away Too Much” leans towards the techno trappings of Yaz and Depeche Mode while even the slower selections — “Right Place”, “We’ve Got a Lot To Lose”, and “I Wanna Tell You” in particular — share a flourish and finesse that ensure that unerring engagement and appeal. So too, “I Would Be in Love (Anyway)” expresses the optimism the pervades the disc overall.

Suffice it to say, Danny George Wilson’s latest offering is all but irresistible. It’s an album that shares craft and credence in equal measure, proof positive that its maker isn’t confined to any particular parameters. Richly textured, perfectly polished, and brilliantly executed, Another Place is nothing less than a telling accomplishment. (By Lee Zimmerman)
