![]() Cindy Cashdollar (from the album Waltz for Abilene available on Silver Shot Records) (by Bryant Liggett) Cindy Cashdollar continues to prove herself worthy of saddling up in any band. It doesn’t matter if an Alt Country outfit or Jam Band, Western Swing or experimental Ambient soundtrack, Cindy Cashdollar is up for a style exploration, which she provides under her own name on the guest-heavy recent release, Waltz for Abilene. The album opens its doors on with a twang banging rocker in the instrumental “Foggy Mt. Rock”, the tracks railroad rhythm giving way to the Bluesy, Gospel flavored “That’s No Way for Me to Get Along”, with vocals from Rory Block. “Skylark” is ambient and dreamy, “Peacock Alley” features Jazz guitar and pedal steel riffs traded off with heavy Hammond organ chords while “How Many More Years” is a hearty, straight-ahead Blues cut and “Salvation” a big, beautiful and slow Gospel instrumental in the Sacred Steel tradition. Amy Helm lends her vocal to the Bob Dylan’s ballad “Ring Them Bells” and Albert Lee is on board for “Memphis Blues”, a happy-go-lucky cut with a care-free bounce, while Cindy Cashdollar’s take on “Oh Susanna” finds her all alone and unplugged. The instrumental is slowed down, lonesome and glorious. “This Train”, with guest John Sebastian, delivers the grit as Waltz for Abilene closes with its title track, the tune, like Cindy’s take on “Oh Susanna,” is aching and lonely. Bluesy bounces, grooves and somber ambience make Waltz for Abilene a mood-driven recording that puts a skip in the step with its rhythms or an tear in the eye with instrumental string pulls. Time spent with some heavy hitters of the Roots world, from Dave Alvin to Asleep at the Wheel, has found Cindy Cashdollar playing straight up Western swing to click-clack rhythmed Roots Rock, and Waltz for Abilene showcases Cindy’s ability to kick down with any band, style, or sound.
