![]() Chuck Prophet (from the album The Land That Time Forgot available on Yep Roc Records) (by Bryant Liggett) Chuck Prophet’s soft storytellers voice is perfect for the delivery of his latest batch of songs, stories that invite you in for personal reflection while digging up a common past that is a part of everyone. Ever an Americana dude, The Land That Time Forgot travels to Psychedelic Soul territory, horns buddying up to subtle twang as Chuck Prophet grooves out of the gate making a great first impression. “Best Shirt On” finds him gussying himself up, admitting its ‘getting harder and harder to make it on my own, but I’m trying’. Prophet name drops Chuck Bukowski, Napoleon and Joan of Arc while a New York City saxophone lays a reflective mood in “High as Johnny Thunders”, as he sings of feeding the kids while plotting the hijacking of a city bus for some quick love. “Marathon” is a rug-cutter ready for some herky-jerk dancing, while “Fast Kid” has an R&B bounce but Chuck Prophet scores big on the slower numbers. “Willie and Nilli” and “Meet Me at the Roundabout” are both beautiful blasts of sentiment, the former making you the third wheel alongside a couple digging on Metallica and eating Chinese food. The words speak of Chuck Prophet’s ability to pen a line that immerses you right in the song. “Get Off the Stage” find Prophet transforming the oval office into a stage, being both polite and hilarious in his request for the president to vacate his workspace. It is a brilliant, detail heavy anti-trump song that includes a Renaissance Fair and John Prine cure as something the man needs but likely doesn’t know exists. Instrumentally, the electric sitar and soulful horns are super additions, while his wife/backing vocalist, Stephanie Finch, adds a fine layer of vocal finesse.
