![]() Chris Moyse (from the album Bitter Ballads and Cynical Prayers available as a self-release) If you asked his opinion, Chris Moyse may not be the best judge of his songs, particularly the batch collected on his recent release, Bitter Ballads and Cynical Prayers. Sure, he is a songwriter, so his tunes are important yet Chris feels that ‘a great song can be powerful enough to change the entire course of your day. But at the end of that day, it’s still just a song. I find artistic freedom in being honest about that’. In his defense, he is distracted by playing to pay close attention as the stories on Bitter Ballads and Cynical Prayers wander across the audio screen of the album. Chris Moyse isn’t the one staring at the honesty of the man in “Drinking Again” as confessions sound too similar nor can he feel the soul baring intentions familiar as they take flight on a scratchy southwest wind i “I’m Not Your Man” or feel the chill of fear from the accusatory finger pointing in “How Deep Can You Dig”. Chris Moyse is a traveling troubadour with a homebase in Nashville, Tennessee where he still holds a day gig to keep him centered feeling that he is ‘less of a hazard when I’m busy’. The constant shuffle keeps pace with a hushed undertone as a new relationship finds its feet for “Dancing Around the Fire” while a letter home dips its pen in a glass half-full, Chris Moyse realizing his musical choices are not winning prizes but he keeps his dignity in “Magician Song”. The small town tale spinning a waltz down Main Street in “Live Till We Die” slows down with each circle around the sun while a lonely fiddle calls attention to Chris Moyse when he hops a traintrack beat for a highway song in “Pueblo Dust” as the melody shrugs alongside hopes looking at the future in “Time Will Tell”.
