![]() Chatham County Line (from the album Strange Fascination available on Yep Roc Records) (by Bryant Liggett) Instrumentation may be the only thing that keeps Raleigh, North Carolina’s Chatham County Line in the bluegrass realm. Even that is pushing judgment considering CCL has over the years added keyboards and pedal steel to the occasional album cut while even occasionally tossing in drums. Within the last year, the quartet amicably parted ways with banjo player Chandler Holt as he pursues other ventures with Dave Wilson, John Teer and Greg Readling forging on. The latest Chatham County Line release, and last with Holt, Strange Fascination nails the band’s well-honed ability to bang out mellow Country Rock and hit a bullseye in the heart with a musical weeper. John Teers backing vocals have become a familiar sound behind Dave Wilson’s. Piano and sadness introduce Strange Fascination with “Oh Me Oh My” as Wilson sings of someone ‘lower than a baritone’ on a mission of ‘hope for me somewhere’. The title track is a dreamy ballad sandwiched by road cuts “Station to Station” and the noble “Free Again”, as Chatham County Line sing of being rid of ‘the long dark shadows in the past’ before they musically stretch out for the songs final minute. “Leave This World” is a gospel cut that kicks off with a new-grass vibe and “Guitar (For Guy Clark)” is a soft cut about the acquisition of a partner for life. “Nothing” is a bluesy closer where Dave Wilson sings ‘most my days I find myself working hard at nothing’, the cut an anthem for the waiting game the world is currently playing. It is an ending that sums up the Chatham County Line motif… providing an easy-going vibe and musical warmth no matter tempo or lyrical content.
