![]() Cave Flowers (from the album Cave Flowers available on Hard Bark Records) Cave Flowers self-titled release is one of those Rock records that may dare listeners to dig into Country music. Like The Replacements, Lucero or scores of predecessors and colleagues from back in the day or as soon as next week, Cave Flowers honest approach to melody and songwriting, along with a well-rounded variety of influences, yields a textbook Indie Rock record that carries hidden twang. It is a spot where Rock’n’Roll dances around rural Roots music while showcasing the catchy songwriting of Andy McAllister. A gritty guitar intro masks a jangle undertone on album opener “Best Lonesome Friend” while “Country Fan” shows off a funky Roots groove, hyping a good time where there is ‘loose change in my pocket and the smokes are all on sale’. “Midnight Movie”, with its ambient pedal steel guitar, digs in with Southwest-style Roots Rock. That musical template is an audible theme coursing like a current through Cave Flowers, the soundtrack standing proud where Alternative Country meets Desert noir. From “Hideaways” to “The Stranger,” Cave Flowers sticks to a steady and mid-tempo melodic pace, with “Trick Tears” standing out as an aching, country ballad that screams for a slowed-down Two Step while “Great Hits” showcases an light-raised anthemic Rock feel. Cave Flowers scream a laid-back, Southern California vibe. The folksiness of Cave Flowers nods to the classic sound of Laurel Canyon, while the Indie DIY-approach targets the Paisley Underground. Cave Flowers knocked the recording out quick, resulting in an album void of wasted studio time and over-production, and full of honest grit.
