![]() Canned Beets (from the album Canned Beets as a self-release) Marching to a drumbeat boogie, “Backfire” slides smoothly into Canned Beets, the self-titled release from the Austin, Texas trio. Taking inspiration from Jazz jam forebearers, Canned Beets use improvisation to flesh out their songs and a mighty groove to guide the tracks. The three-piece, Rydog (Nightowls) guitar, Rolf Ordahl (Archie Bell) keyboards, and Doug Leveton (Black Joe Lewis) drums, open up Canned Beets and pour out a sound that goes down like Southern sweet tea. “Squid Fishous” is spacious, the rhythm a barely rippling current as guitar lines pepper the cut with moans and sighs while warm organ notes sparkle and swoon. The beat is a tease on “Barrel House”, the rhythms of “Wood Grained” tough yet mellow like fine whiskey while “Winston’s” percolates on island grooves as “Nice Tea” spits and sputters. Canned Betts are a spinning wheel of sound, improvisational funk and thick Roots jams ranging from twanged guitar licks (“One of Those”) to late night Jazz-dosed noir (“Keyless Entry”).
