Buffalo Rose and Tom Paxton (from the album Rabbit available on Misra Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Pittsburgh, PA band Buffalo Rose and Grammy winning elder statesman of Folk music Tom Paxton make a great pair. One, a youthful and exuberant band, the other a prolific songwriter; their pairing shouldn’t be anything short of wonderful, which, of course, happens on their albeit too short E.P. Rabbit. Four cuts just aren’t enough. You will, for sure, want more but never bite the hand that feeds is what they say, and you’ll gladly take what is offered….and what Buffalo Rose and Tom Paxton offer is great. “Runaway” is zippy with angelic, clean sheet harmonies and NewGrass instrumentation that call for the dancefloor as those voices join together ‘feeling free is such a beautiful thing, I hope they never ever stop that music, cause it’s enough to make a grown man sing!’ An uplifting opener it is! Buffalo Rose and Tom Paxton drop references to beautiful Monterey in the road song of “Green Light”, a slacker Roots Gospel cut with a slow and lazy groove while “I Give You the Morning” is a straight-ahead gentle Folk tune where Paxton finally reveals that voice. “Jennifer’s Rabbit” is a playful nursery rhyme within a song. The swift instrumentation supporting the harmonies that carefully deliver a load of lyrics make for a fun package, with the pair of Tom Paxton and Buffalo Rose breathing life into each other.
