![]() Barbar ‘O’Rhum (from the album Journal de B’O’R available on Mannequin Vanity Records) (by Bryant Liggett) The unforgiving blitz of a drum tempo makes it a punk record. The swaying melodies and maritime vibe gives it a sea-shanty feel, and the acoustic instrumentation makes it a meth-fueled Folk recording. With an armful of influences from Gogol Bordello, Defiance Ohio, and The Pogues, Barbar ‘O’ Rhum deliver Journal de B’O’R, an uplifting and aggressive effort, delivered dirty and dramatic on a musical front by gutsy and glorious melodies of Barbar ‘O’Rhum. Inability to translate the French lyrics forces those who are limited in language to feel the album and concentrate on the tone, delivered intense and urgent, a purposeful melodic charge. “Pirate des Champs” kicks off Journal de B’O’R as a lo-fi western ditty before turning into an Irish punk stomp, “Le Rocher des Pirates” is a few seconds of video game blips before morphing into avant-garde, theatrical metal with Rock solid riffage, the sonic attack continuing into “Birdy”, an identity crisis of a cut that three-minutes in toys with a soundtrack to a middle eastern dance club. “Freres de Bitte” is a bouncy blast, and album closer, “Les P’tits Rafiots”, is a culmination of all the styles in one big wrap up. The punk, stomp, and drinking song vibe of Barbar ‘O’Rhum blends together as a warm dose of musical madness on Journal ‘O’Rhum.
