Alex Webb (from the album British Standard Time available on Lateralize Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
The Duke of Hamilton pub, home to the Hampstead Jazz Club, opened its doors in 1721. The pandemic shut the doors for live music in 2020, and the historic venue took action by creating an income source for the musicians who helped establish the North London club. British Jazz A-lister, piano man Alex Webb, came up with the plan for British Standard Time and the Hampstead Jazz Club commissioned the project. For the songs, Alex Webb chose homegrown songwriters for British Standard Time. Cuts that became hits across the pond make the track listing. Offering selections from the 1930’s with Tony Momrelle behind the microphone for Ray Noble’s “The Very Thought of You”, Carroll Thompson seductively singing Noel Coward’s “Mad About the Boy” while she returns for the 1932 cut from Jimmy Campbell, Reg Connolly, and American Harry Woods with “Try a Little Tenderness”. Setting the dial for 1940’s Jazz, Carroll Thompson handles the vocals for “Lullaby of Birdland”, written by British pianist George Shearing, while Luca Manning croons over late night noir on “Let’s Slip Away”, written by British saxophonist John Dankworth. Offering more current cuts for the Jazz makeover. Alex Webb puts Jo Harrop in for lead vocals on Elvis Costello’s “Almost Blue”, Amy Winehouse’s “Love is a Losing Game”, and U2’s “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. British Standard Time tags the 1960 musical Oliver! for “As Long as He Needs Me”, sung by Jo Harrop, and offers Paul Weller’s “You Do Something to Me” with vocals from Luca Manning. Musical organizer Alex Webb offers a cut from his catalog with “Breakfast for Two” with Carroll Thompson on vocals.
