![]() 49 Winchester (from the album III available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett) Gritty but not gruff, Isaac Gibson of Virginia-based band 49 Winchester has the perfect voice for heartbreak Country and Roots. His vocal is a slight rasp that conveys urgency and despair whether moaning out a sad ballad or leaning into Country boogie, floating above instrumentation ready to score a crying in your beer scene or a driving to an exit road trip. Their latest release, III, floats around the Indie Country category with explorations into chugging hard Folk and Country-Soul. “Long Hard Life” introduces III with boogie Roots, Little Feat vibe complete with a solid organ groove while “Everlasting Lover” drips with emotion, a gripping love story where 49 Winchester are ‘weary from the road, half beaten down’. “The Road Home” is an autobiographical tune documenting touring band doings and doldrums, six dudes crammed into a van with ‘more damn gear than the Rolling Stones’ and “Why Else Would I Call You” dips into classic dancehall Country where twang gets hammered into a groove as the interplay between pedal steel and a six-string guitar calls for a two-stepping shuffle. “Hays, Kansas” is big and emotional with instrumental breaks that drift into a Southern Rock ballad, ”You Never Did Love Me” and “Get Clean” are a one-two punch of heartbreak and solid self-reflection. 49 Winchester remain a band unafraid to bare all and the ripping twang they provide for gut-wrenching is the perfect base for their songs of highway and heartache.
