Great Willow (from the album Find Yourself in Los Angeles)
There is a musical tradition that flows through Laurel Canyon, polishing and creating new openings for its inhabitants much like the cascading water that originally carved out its gullies and gorges. Great Willow are one the bands taking up residence within the stone walls that border the canyon, staging their debut album, Find Yourself in Los Angeles, with songs that map their decision and subsequent journey west as the songs leave their hillside home and spread across the sprawl of the city living just beyond its musical sanctuary. Find Yourself in Los Angeles stakes out a claim in its adopted city as the title track pounds out a city beat peppered by mariachi horns and bordered by strict guitar strums.
The dual vocals of James Combs and Erin Shawn Hawkins carry the storylines on Find Yourself in Los Angeles as Great Willow is rounded out by the Rich McCulley (guitar) and Ed Barguiarena (drums). Like a spring breeze along the canyon walls “With Care from Someone” bounces brightly along as “Rear View Mirror” marches on the sharp-edge of stuttered rhythms while “Time Bombs” adds a touch of Great Willow’s trademark ‘beautiful twang’ and “Many Things” teaches its lessons on the graceful sway of the band. Great Willow leave their SoCal homebase for an audio journey north to “Petaluma” as they confide they are “Secretly Happy”, and seek a balance between then and now with “The New Normal as they close out Find Yourself in Los Angeles with the promise “Love Will Finally Find You”.
