Some start slow. That is not the line that Gina Sicilia chose to stand in, Gina opens ‘Can’t Control Myself’ with the track “Addicted”. giving a voice to words that explain the album title as well as her intentions..... ”I take a puff of my camel pop and drink up all i got, pull a dollar out my pocket put a quarter in the slot....the only place I’m going is the only place I’ve been ‘cause I’m addicted, I think I’ll have another round ....I love the way it tastes, I love the way it feel as its goin’ down, later weighing in with “I don’t care anymore, I can die, I can die when I’m done”. There have been days, maybe a week or two or, at the odd moment, a year or so, when those lines were more of a desire than a warning in all of our lives. It is something you say, right? There are extenuating circumstances. What sets apart Gina Sicilia’s words from the more casual throw off line is the way she says it.
Whether the object or her desire is receiving Gina’s full throat attack (“Crazy ‘Bout You Baby”), her soft pleas for a level playing field (“Once in A While”) or an easier path in life (“Gimme A Simple Song”), she is believable. A line is drawn from the depth of her voice into way inside of the listener. It’s like the wind, you can’t see it but, boy, when it blows, you can sure feel something.
Musically, ‘Can’t Control Myself’ anchors the tracks with blue organ swashes, solid rhythms and playfully effected guitar riffs that flash and frolic around in the arrangements, tugging and teasing the voices to try and distract it. Happily, though Gina tells us she can’t control herself, one listen to her voice makes you question if that statement is 100% true.
