Duke Robillard has covered the gamut of good American roots music for decades. the founder of Roomful of Blues has touched on swing blues, jazz, Chicago blues, rock and damn near every style of Americana over his illustrious career. His work with Sunny Crownover began with Sunny and Her Joy Boys earlier this year and gave us all a taste of what was to come. After the passing of the great Les Paul, Duke rounded up his usual band of local legends...bassist Marty Ballou, drummer Mark Texiera, sax-master Doug James, trombonist Carl Querfurth and together with Sunny put together what could be the years most surprisingly fun, yet brilliant record. Tales From the Tiki Lounge is a marvelous piece of work to add to a stellar portfolio. Crownover swoons through the era of Mae West, Rosemary Clooney, the Andrews Sisters and of course the beautiful Mary Ford whose work with Les Paul is monumental. Duke is, well, Duke. He's a master of style and tone and would have Les Paul grinning from ear to ear as he captures the inimitable guitar legend at his best. Robillard's choice of material is flawless grabbing lost gems like Occidental Woman, Kiss of Fire, Put The Blame on Mame, Bye Bye Blues, Smoke Rings, a killer rendition of Besame Mucho and even though it's been done many times, the Robillard/Crownover version of Sway is worth the price of admission. Grab a martini, pull out the smoking jacket, light the tiki torches and take a tour through some of the most underrated classic jazz lounge music of all time. Robillard's production is nothing short of perfection, even including album scratches and and old recording feel on the intro to Occidental Woman, complete with gong.
