William Prince (from the album Further from the Country

William Prince (from the album Further from the Country available on Six Shooter Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

A conversational knack of sharing a story, delivered by a voice that whispers in your ear, giving the impression that the words are meant just for you. That is the takeaway from hearing the songs of William Prince. He introduces Le Lido like the guy sitting on the next barstool, telling his sad tale to you, to the shot glass and beer back in front of him, and to the man staring back from the mirror judging from behind a row of bottles in “Thousand Miles of Chain”. Random memories circle around, forming into a tight ball of loss, its weight heavy as “For the First Time” makes a wish from the bottom of a well. The blacktop outside the windshield receives a splash of color from the “Flowers on the Dash” while the man behind the wheel explains the bouquet to a friend in the passenger seat. These experiences and more are displayed across the roster of songs for Further from the Country, the recent release from master storyteller William Prince.

Produced by Liam Duncan (aka Boy Golden), the album hears William Prince tell personal tales of his upbringing and childhood in Peguis First Nation, Manitoba, Canada. Dark memories are cradled by a musical landscape of Folk and Country, with hints of Rock’n’Roll, that turns the blend into a cosmic sound that has the back of the stories on Further from the Country. His early experiences in a close-knit indigenous community are displayed in the stories he tells; facing both the joys and the pain as a way to deal with an injustice mired in the complexities of an ever-changing world. William Prince finds ‘the emptiness is piling’, expressing his feelings with the power of a single word in “Damn” as Further from the Country rides a hard-edged road rhythm in “On Rolls the Wheel” and casts shadows on “The Charmer” as he keeps one step ahead of the drama he creates.  The Further from the Country title track cruises on a fast-rolling groove while Wiliam Prince explains how he navigates the daily letdowns of life for “All the Same”, exiting the album of a dreamscape of soft strums that wrap around the heart confessions in “More of the Same”.
