5/24/2025 Webb Wilder (from the album Hillbilly SpeedballWebb Wilder (from the album Hillbilly Speedball available on Landslide Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
The petal and the metal have already been pushed to their groove limits when Webb Wilder cruises into Hillbilly Speedball with tales of mountain dwellers in the opening cut title track for his recent release. Heart and Country Soul are AM Gold life-stories circa 1950 in the rhythmic twang of “Last Song (I’m Ever Gonna Sing)”. Honky Tonk Rock’n’Roll was the combo that brought Webb Wilder to the party on his first (1986) release, It Came from Nashville. Never straying from the beat that added thick bass note boogie and metro-perfect drumbeats to his music, Webb Wilder continues the Roots Rock in Hillbilly Speedball that he has curated, and developed, over the course of a stellar career. Webb Wilder advises on a human condition tough to resist in “Allergic to Love” as “Sorrow” walks a confident strut to deliver a cover of a B-side from The McCoys. A lazy vocal ease accents Webb Wilder’s comfortability factor for Roots music when he admits to the pull of life in a Countrified version of the Savoy Brown hit “Tell Mama” as a poison pen writes the words for “kick Me When I’m Down” and guitar jangle sparkles in the career goals of “Coupla Good Moves”. Stomping Blues is the soundtrack when Webb Wilder hits cruise control for “V6 Blues” as Hillbilly Speedball puts a percolating rhythm underneath the cheating-ways-walk striding across “Beautiful Delilah”.
