Waxahatchee  (from the album Tigers Blood

Waxahatchee  (from the album Tigers Blood available on Anti- Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Opening Tigers Blood the music sets the stage for a sonic expereince rather than simply the beginnings of a song cycle. On her recent release, Waxahatchee steps right into the vocals, speaking singing advice for the human race (‘if you’re not living, then you’re dying’) and one-on-one suggestions (‘you drive like you’re wanted in four states’). the sound rises like morning fog on a rhythm of melodic footfalls in “3 Sisters” while over the course of one song the emotions and beat mingle and intertwine as Waxahatchee confidently grips the tale. Indie Americana defines the rhythms bubbling underneath “Bored” while a lazy sway glides over “Lone Star Lake” and quiet Country strums are the foundation for the lyrical flow of “Crimes of the Heart”.
Tigers Blood gathers the songs of Waxahatchee (Alabama-born, Kansas City-based Katie Crutchfield). The tales are personal, her delivery blurring the lines between the real life of the singer and the character skins she inhabits for the sake of a song. Her vocals roller-coaster on “Ice Cold” as a Rock’n’Roll strut propels the potential plans of “Evil Spawn” while a sluggish beat wraps around “The Wolves”. Waxahatchee counts days in “365”, walks a determined rhythmic stride across “Burns Out at Midnight” and ‘braces for a bombshell’ in “Right Back to It” as Tigers Blood steps to a guitar jangle delivering the message of “Crowbar” and exits on the quietly strummed sway of the title track.
