There’s a long line of killer, 21st Century Blues Rock guitar players, and somewhere toward the front of that line sits Warren Haynes. Audibly and obviously reared on the Clapton, Beck and, Page albums he consumed, Haynes soulful, southern groove lives in his sound (which is likely what landed him in the Allman Brothers Band). Warren plays guitar parts that take their sweet time and are well worth the wait on his latest in Million Voices Whisper. Warren Haynes will always nod to his killer co-workers, doing so in the album opener in “These Changes”. It’s a mellow ballad, clocking in above six minutes, featuring Haynes trading Southern-rock licks with Derek Trucks. Haynes grooves in the skip-a-long cut “Go Down Swinging” that features hip horn blasts. Lukas Nelson and Jamey Johnson roll in on the Gospel heavy “Day of Reckoning” and Derek Trucks returns on the emotional ballad “Real, Real Love.” Then there’s the Boogie cut, as Haynes fires into the funk and jam on “Lies, Lies, Lies > Monkey Dance > Lies, Lies, Lies.” This is a cut that’s driven by funky keys that would push festival kids into a dancing whirl. “From Here on Out” is a perfect jam band ballad, starting slow but picking up, its moving melody powered by exploratory guitar licks. This is big, soulful, Rhythm & Blues Rock’n’Roll, with a nod to the 21st Century world of Jam bands. Warren Haynes has the front door key to enter both worlds.
