Borrowing a tune from Porter Wagoner, the late Don Heffington sings the title track to the recent release, Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute to Don Heffington. As a benefit for Sweet Relief, a charity that helps musicians in need of all-around aid, Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’ features twenty cuts that nod to Don Heffington, performed by an array of talented friends and collaborators of the musician. A drummer as well as a singer/songwriter, Don Heffington co-founded Lone Justice in the 1980’s, adding to his accomplishments providing session and touring duties for an array of artists that include Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Lowell George, Tom Waits, Van Dyke Parks, Jackson Browne, Victoria Williams, Dave Alvin, Peter Case, Ronee Blakley, Lucinda Williams, The Wallflowers, The Jayhawks, Dwight Yoakam, and Adam Sandler among many others.
The artists on Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute to Don Heffington are equally diverse. Jackson Browne sings a Don Heffington original with “Everywhere I Look” and Ramsay Millwood offers judgment in “That’s Hollywood”. Trading a guitar for piano, Fiona Apple delivers a cabaret version of “Lately” as Buddy Miller bemoans tough times in “Fired Again” and Victoria Williams walks with sweet confidence over a Jazz-deranged arrangement of “Although the Lord”. Former Lone Justice bandmates offer cuts when Marvin Etzioni takes to the air in “Flying Over Flagstaff” and Tony Gilkyson philosophizes in “Seed on Hard Ground”. Peter Case, Eleni Mandell, Dave Alvin, Willie Watson, Inara George, and stunning accumulation of performers round out the roster for the album. Bordering the track listing on Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute to Don Heffington, Watkins Family Hour begin the song cycle with opening track “Kiss the Moon Goodbye” while Don Heffington and his daughter Laura exit the album duetting on the Van Morrison cut, “Irish Heartbeat”.
