Kevn Kinney is the embodiment of the phrase IYKYK (if you know, you know). While it remains a shame that not everyone is musically aware of this great Southern music treasure, a songwriter who flies just below the radar, Kevn Kinney has steered the band helms, Drivin N Cryin, for decades. Music enthusiasts have been rewarded by his musical prowess, and his well-deserved placement among a who’s-who of songwriting giants of the Rock of the jangle and jam variety.
His songs are currently celebrated in a tribute that has been dropping covers of Kinney’s thick catalogfor years, the latest Let’s Go Dancing: Stopped a Freight Train with a Grain of Sand is a killer collection that finds bands putting their stamp on Kevn Kinney’s status.
“Let’s Go Dancing” is all jangle, with Deer Tick playing close to the original and keeping their version just as tender. That tenderness is one of a one-two-three knockout. Track two finds The Black Crowes in full Rock’n’Roll mode, delivering “Acceleration” as a kick in the ass while The Crosses prove that “Powerhouse” is a blast of industrial Punk. The Dino’s Boys link Kinney to the Ramones on “Saddle on the Side of the Road”, Bobby Bare Jr and Richie Kirkpatrick give “Ridin’ On the Soul Road” some psychedelic tones, and the Robert Kearns closer “She Doesn’t Wanna Go” is a trippy Blues burner.
Kevn Kinney can nod to CBGB-era Punk and mid 70’s stadium Rock while breaking your heart.
