Gruene Hall plays large in the life (lives) of Uncle Lucius. The venue played host to the hometown Austin, Texas band for both their farewell concert (2018) and the group’s reunion show (2023). It is fitting that a live recording of the Uncle Lucius two-night Sold Out shows when the nearly 150-year-old Gruene Hall hosted the band with Live in ’25. The recently released album kicks off with Uncle Lucius holding a “Pocket Full of Misery” in a set that includes tracks from their past releases partnered with new cuts. “Ouroboros”, from their 2015 release, The Light and “Ain’t It the Same”, from 2009’s Hold Your Head Up make the list alongside cuts from 2023’s Like It’s the Last One Left (“Keep on Singing”, “Trace My Soul”). Uncle Lucius give a shout-out to local taqueria’s with “Let Me Get a Lengua Plate”, keeping things close to home when they discuss the influx of west coast refugees in “All the Angelenos” as they promise a future to “Rosalia”.

Staying true to their patented brand of music Uncle Lucius (Kevin Galloway, Joshua Dane Greco, and Drew Scherger) back the songs on Live in ’25 with hybrids of Soul, Americana, Country, Blues, and Swamp Rock. They nod to the “Mississippi Dive Bartendress”, follow a beckoning hammered drum beat into “Holy Roller”, ride a mighty groove for “Say There Sunshine”, and welcome passengers on board for a desert road adventure in “End of 118”. The opening notes of “Keep the Wolves Away” bring a combination of reverent silence and crowd shouts for the audience sing-a-long on a cherished tune from Uncle Lucius while the band exits Live in ’25 with a cover of Bobby Charles’ cut “Save Me Jesus”. (by Danny McCloskey)
