There is a comfort to the music of Tyller Gummersal on first listen. His recent release, In the Middle, collects the tunes of a traveling troubadour: the music familiar, the words personal. An early education on Country Rock in the album releases of The Byrds and Neil Young were a first crush for Tyller Gummersall. We are all products of our environment, even if the stages of change are fluid. The music of Tyller Gummersall combines influences with the experiences of playing live, a life on the road, and coming back home. Backed by a committed rhythm section (George Lilly – drums, Jim Kelley – bass), In the Middleshowcases the songwriting skills, subtly seductive guitar work, and emotional storytelling of Tyller Gummersall. With “Hands on the Wheel” he fills the space underneath the story with finely woven acoustic guitar notes as a hammering heartbeat grounds “What a World” and a gnarly guitar groove supports the request for ‘easy money’ in “Tired of the Hard Way”. Opening the EP with the In the Middle title track, Tyller Gummersall covers The Weeknd with a Folk Country reworking of “Blinding Lights” as he sings a love letter to his traveling companion with “Hands on the Wheel”. His thoughts take him down a road littered with the debris of the past and towards his destination in “Your Direction” while a rhythmic bounce celebrates younger times in “Running Free”.
