8/2/2025 Tyler Childers (from the album Snipe HunterTyler Childers (from the album Snipe Hunter available on Hickman Holler Records/RCA) (by Bryant Liggett)
Tyler Childers is laying it on thick. His latest, Snipe Hunter, is a big, Rick Rubin-produced album of Indie Country and Rock, along with some Pop and Psychedelic Roots music. It’s sad, sentimental, and tough; all the things you’ll want from Roots Rock’n’Roll. There’s a grittiness to album opener “Eatin’ Big Time” as Childers recounts a hunting tale. “Cuttin’ Teeth” is a dreamy and twangy dose of Roots Country and “Bitin’ List” is a fun song about dislike, and keeping someone ‘high on the biting list’ if he happened to have rabies. Then Tyler Childers gets heavy, his vocals screaming and aching on “Nose on the Grindstone” as he doles out the fatherly advice ‘keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills’. “Watch Out” is wonderful cut that is advice for walking in the woods, from being aware of snakes and bears to how you can find mushrooms… a nature lesson in a song. Dropping a solid Pop song with “Down Under”, Tyler Childers sings the praises of Australia while he throws out a chaotic blast of Punk-infused greatness in the title track. The album closes with “Dirty Ought Trill”, a cut that lives somewhere between front porch banger and soulful, electro-bouncer. Tyler Childers is going to be all over best of lists at the end of the year with Snipe Hunter. His lyrical narratives are straight up stories laid over killer melodies that are non-stop ear candy, something worthy of repeat plays from your turntable.
