11/1/2025 Tommy Emmanuel (from the album Living in the LightTommy Emmanuel (from the album Living in the Light available on Tommy Emmanuel / Many Hats Distribution) (by Danny McCloskey)
The recent release from Tommy Emmanuel, Living in the Light, is an intimate recording. Compiled is just four days with producer Vance Powell (Jack White, Chris Stapleton), Living in the Light captures the immediacy of a live concert. The songs, featuring the top shelf playing of guitar master Tommy Emmanuel, were captured in one or two takes. The playing is crisp and bright, notes sparkling like stars in a desert night’s sky. He opens the album with fast-paced playing in “Young Travelers” as 70-year-old Tommy Emmanuel dedicates cuts to his granddaughter’s with “Scarlett’s World” and “Little Georgia”. Persistent guitar strums provide a rhythm underneath the notes of “Gdansk” and ambient noises mark the entry into “Initiation 25”. The Australian-based musician has spent six decades on stages ranging from the Sydney Opera House to Carnegie Hall, performing with artists such as Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Les Paul. Living in the Light is an amalgam of styles that move between Jazz, Roots music, classical, and acoustic Pop. The album hosts frenetic playing in “Black and White World” as it hears hints of Spanish guitar in the flash-fire finger-style work in “A Drowning Heart”. Tommy Emmanuel puts rhythm underneath the Living in the Light vocal tracks when he introduces “Maxine” and hops on board are hammer beat to walk across album closer “Ya Gotta Do What Ya Gotta Do”.
