Tomar & The FC’s (from the album Soul Searching

Tomar & The FC’s (from the album Soul Searching available on Tenwick Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
In the days of unchecked racism, the Chitlin’ Circuit was named for venues in the eastern, southern, and upper Midwest sections of the United States where black performers were allowed to stage a show. While the policies of the Jim Crow era have been torn down, the Chitlin’ Circuit has now become synonymous with theatres that cater specifically to an African-American marketplace. That is where Tomar Williams began his career, starting off his career as lead vocalist for a family band in the 1980’s. After years working as a music producer and sideman, the call of performing returned. Tomar Willliams was introduced to a local instrumental band, The FC’s, in 2015 and Tomar & The FC’s set up shop to make vintage Soul music in Austin, Texas.

Kicking off Soul Searching, their recent release, with some advice for the daily, Tomar & The FC’s suggesting ‘don’t mind the joneses, worry about your own shit’ on opening cut “Don’t Worry About the Joneses”. Soul Searching offers a collection of Soul music magic that tags the past with the same love for the sound that filled recording studio in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Los Angeles during the genre’s heyday. Happily, the music of Tomar & The FC’s does not rely on mimicking or copying the recordings from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The band’s version of Soul music is a fresh take, filled to overflow with horn riffs, chopped guitar chords that bring in the funk, warm harmonies, and a mighty backbeat that could sharpen that blade in your boot. Tomar & The FC’s champion optimism in “New Way” as they give thanks for their jobs in “Gotta Give the People”. Soul Searchingturns the lights down low for smooth Soul confessions of “Time Stands Still” and picks up the pace for the strut across “Come on With Me Baby”. The rhythms of “Lose My Mind” support the storyline of leaving as the band walk tall while “Partner in Crime” celebrates long-term love. Tomar & The FC’s exit Soul Searching on the promise of “No More Pain” on the rhythmic march of the album’s closing cut. (by Danny McCloskey)
